Nicko Cancels Additional Cruise as Vasco da Gama Returns to Shipyard

Vasco da Gama

Nicko Cruises cancelled an additional cruise onboard the Vasco da Gama to allow for a further unscheduled drydock visit.

The 1993-built vessel was set to welcome passengers back for a cruise to the Norwegian Fjords on May 26, 2026, having been out of service since late April for repairs.

The 14-night voyage had to be cancelled due to the need for additional repair work, according to a report by Schiffe und Kreuzfahrten.

The local news source said that passengers were already informed of the decision through a company-issued statement.

“With great anticipation for the planned restart, we set sail yesterday for Hamburg on our Vasco da Gama. However, during the crossing, an unexpected new technical defect occurred in one of the engines,” the company was quoted as saying.

“After careful consideration, we have decided to return to Brest to thoroughly investigate the cause and initiate the necessary measures. The safety and reliability of our ship’s operations are always our top priority,” Nicko added.

The company noted that the ship’s upcoming cruise had to be cancelled as a result, stating that it is offering attractive rebooking options for passengers.

“It is important for us to emphasize that the current technical problem is in no way related to the recent repairs carried out on the starboard propeller at the shipyard,” the company continued.

After cutting its world cruise short due to technical problems in late April, the Vasco da Gama underwent an unscheduled drydock at the Damen Brest Shipyard in Northern France.

The company had to cancel two cruises to make room for the needed repairs, including the May 1 and May 9, 2026, departures.

The ship departed the facility on Saturday, May 23, before turning back toward its homeport in Hamburg, Germany. Acquired by Nicko Cruises in 2021, the 1,270-passenger vessel is now scheduled to welcome guests back on June 14, 2026

when it is scheduled to kick off an 18-night voyage to Iceland and Scandinavia sailing roundtrip from Kiel.
