Hurtigruten’s Midnatsol Resumes Service After Refit

Midnatsol in Drydock

Hurtigruten’s Midnatsol recently debuted updated features and refreshed public areas after undergoing a drydock in Northern Europe.

After pausing its service in Norway earlier this month, the 2003-built vessel entered drydock at the Örskov Shipyard in Frederikshavn, Denmark.

The company said that the refurbishment was quite a logistical and organizational challenge, noting that guests can now look forward to a freshly renovated ship.

“We had to move loads of stuff back and forth, in and out, up and down. Around a hundred new mattresses were hoisted onto Deck 9. Whether managers, restaurant managers or expedition leaders, everyone pitched in right until the end,” Hurtigruten stated.

The company added that the ship got thousands of square meters of new carpet, in addition to upgraded staterooms.

The Midnatsol also debuted two new restaurants, including Arran, a brasserie on Deck 5, and Røst, which is located on Deck 8 and offers fine dining options.

Hurtigruten also updated Flora, the 500-guest ship’s main dining room, with new furniture and a refreshed look.

Other areas that underwent updates include the 1893 Observation Lounge and the ship’s sauna and wellness space.

Additional updates included repainting outdoor decks, which are now said to feature Hurtigruten’s classic livery.

After spending three years in service for HX as the Maud, the Midnatsol returned to the Hurtigruten coastal service fleet in late 2024.

In addition to regaining its original name, the ship was also reflagged before rejoining the company’s regular service in the Norwegian coast.

As part of the company’s Signature fleet, the Midnatsol offers itineraries from Bergen to Svalbard during summers, as well as routes from Hamburg to North Cape in winters.
