Costa Cruises and LC3 Trasporti have initiated a pilot project at the Genoa and Savona ports using electric trucks for ship supply operations.
The test, conducted in October 2025, utilized heavy electric vehicles (BEVs) with a capacity exceeding 40 tons.
“We are proud to have been chosen by Costa Cruises, an Italian company and part of Carnival Corporation, as a partner in this ambitious project,” said Michele Ambrogi, commercial director of LC3 Trasporti.
“For three years, we have worked side by side, step by step, continuously improving our transport solutions for a common goal: protecting the environment and future generations,” added Ambrogi.
“Our journey towards greenhouse gas neutrality continues under the banner of innovation. This applies not only to our fleet but also to all cruise-related activities, including the logistics required to supply our ships,” said Marco Dioda, vice president of procurement and supply chain at Costa Cruises.
“For this reason, after a positive first experience in 2023, we decided to extend our collaboration with LC3 Trasporti, an Italian partner that shares our values and vision,” added Dioda.
Costa said that the initiative represents a natural evolution of an already established path, which in previous years saw the introduction of BIO-LNG-powered vehicles to reduce emissions in logistics activities.
The company said in a press release that the introduction of BEVs enables zero-emission operation on fully electrifiable routes.
The results achieved have led to the decision to continue the collaboration into 2026, with plans to increase the use of electric vehicles.
The goal is to gradually integrate zero-emission solutions with those already in use, such as BIO-LNG-powered vehicles, which are employed on medium- and long-distance routes in Italy and Europe.
This will maximize reductions in environmental impact across various operational areas, according to Costa.
According to the companies, the introduction of electric trucks is an additional step in a broader, more structured plan to make maritime logistics increasingly sustainable and aligned with European decarbonization goals.
