Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Eyes 35-year Service Life for Cruise Fleet

Norwegian Spirit in Asia

“We always look at what the market is out there,” said Harry Sommer, president and CEO of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, commenting on the potential of vessel sales on the company’s year-end and fourth quarter earnings call.

“I would like to point out that the oldest ships in our fleet are from ’98 and ’99, so none of them have reached yet 30 years; and we believe our ships can get to 35 years or beyond. So, there is a little bit of room there to go before we have to be aggressively considering ship retirements.”

Sommer also noted the company has been aggressive in maintaining its fleet over the years.

“One of the blessings of coming on after the previous CEO, who was a huge believe in investing in our product is that our ships are extraordinarily well maintained.”

Sommer said he visited ships in the fleet regularly and was very pleased with how well they are maintained.

“I don’t think there is anything imminent coming but we always keep our eye open,” Sommer added.
