The cruise and wine industries are mourning the loss of Rick Garced, a renowned wine master, restaurateur, writer, and consultant whose work revolutionized wine programs both at sea and on land.
In the early 2000s, Rick transformed the cruise experience through his innovative wine programs for Celebrity Cruises, Apollo Ship Chandlers, and Silversea Cruises, setting new standards for excellence in hospitality.
Rick was the founding President & CEO of the United States Sommelier Association, where he dedicated his life to advancing wine education. Through his leadership, the USSA established prestigious wine schools at institutions such as Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts and Johnson & Wales University. He also played a pivotal role in education development through the Wine Master Class, inspiring countless cruise ship sommeliers and hospitality professionals worldwide. Rick served as part of the senior leadership team for his dear friend Gérard Bertrand wines in the USA, where he promoted sustainability and the art of wine.
Rick’s achievements were recognized globally. He was honored as a Commandeur d’Honneur of the Commanderie du Bontemps, Bordeaux, and served as an Official Certified Wine Educator for L’Ecole du Vin. His passion, vision, and authenticity left a profound impact on the wine and hospitality industries, as well as on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Rick is survived by his loving wife, Nohemi, and his cherished brothers and sisters.
His contributions to the cruise and wine industries, his commitment to education, and his enduring legacy of kindness and inspiration will continue to influence generations to come. He will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
