European Waterways has announced its acquisition of the Shannon Princess, which is said to be Ireland’s only luxury hotel barge.
Cruising Southern Ireland’s River Shannon since 2003, the Shannon Princess was owned and operated by husband-and-wife duo Ruairi and Olivia Gibbons and has been a part of European Waterways’ offerings, the company said in a press release.
Now entirely under European Waterways’ ownership, the barge will continue to follow the same itinerary while gradually introducing enhancements that elevate the experience, the company said.
Given the increasing demand and current booking trends, with the Shannon Princess booking up years in advance, the company plans to extend the season for 2025 and beyond.
This expansion will be supported by the company’s sales and reservations team based in the UK offices.
Designed to accommodate up to 10 passengers, the Shannon Princess features en suite cabins, a panoramic saloon and a sun deck with a spa pool.
“We are thrilled to welcome the Shannon Princess to the European Waterways family,” said Derek Banks, managing director of European Waterways.
“Her charm and character align perfectly with our commitment to luxury and cultural immersion. This acquisition further enhances our ability to offer our guests unforgettable journeys through Ireland’s stunning landscapes and historic waterways,” added Banks.
According to European Waterways, curated experiences will be offered, such as private whiskey tastings at historic distilleries, guided tours of ancient castles and walking and fishing opportunities.
Exclusive “Insider Experiences” include onboard cooking demonstrations, live traditional Irish music and private visits to stately homes.
The company added that in line with all other European Waterways-owned barges, the Shannon Princess will afford the traditional blue, yellow and red European Waterways livery ahead of the 2025 cruise season.
