The British Virgin Islands recently welcomed the first call of P&O Cruises’ Iona, the port authority announced in a press release.

According to the statement, the LNG-powered vessel arrived in Tortola for the first time on Jan. 23, 2025, with nearly 5,000 guests onboard.

“Iona’s arrival marks a significant milestone in the Territory’s cruise tourism sector, underscoring its strategic importance as a premier destination in the region,” the British Virgin Islands Ports Authority (BVIPA) said.

Offering a 35-day cruise to the Caribbean that departed from Southampton, England, the Iona visited Tortola for an overnight stay.

According to BVIPA, the call highlights the BVI’s appeal to major cruise lines and reinforces its commitment to providing quality services.

To commemorate the ship’s maiden visit, a plaque was presented on behalf of the Government and the people of the Virgin Islands to Iona’s Captain Andrew Wolverson.

Present at the plaque exchanging ceremony were Governor Daniel Pruce, Premier Natalio Wheatley, Minister of Communication and Works Kye Rymer, Junior Minister for Tourism and Culture Luce Hodge-Smith, as well as representatives from the BVI Ports Authority, BVI Tourist Board and Film Commission, Cyril B. Romney Tortola Pier Park, and port agent Island Shipping.

“This exchange symbolizes the British Virgin Islands’ dedication to fostering enduring partnerships within the cruise industry and capitalizing on future growth opportunities,” BVIPA stated.

On Jan. 24, 2025, the Iona was joined by its sister ship Arvia at the cruise pier in Tortola, in what the port authority called “a remarkable maritime moment” for the British Virgin Islands.

The double call showcases BVI Ports Authority’s operational capacity and commitment to excellence in port management, the press release claimed.

“As the Territory continues to develop its infrastructure and services, the BVIPA remains dedicated to supporting the evolving needs of the cruise industry,” it added.
