The Port of Funchal has announced that it is experiencing an increasing number of cruise ships making overnight calls.

This surge aligns with the expectations of the Madeira Port Administration (APRAM, SA) and is projected to reach 73 overnight visits by the end of the year, the port said in a press release.

Last year, the final two months saw 14 overnight stays. By the first week of December this year, that number had already been matched.

Including the additional calls scheduled until Dec. 31, 2024, the total will reach 34 overnight stops.

“For us at the Port of Funchal, this is a strategic priority not only in terms of revenue, as overnights generate more fees, but also in promoting the destination itself,” said Paula Cabaço, chair of APRAM’s board of directors.

Next year, APRAM plans to intensify its promotional efforts with cruise lines, showcasing Madeira’s main attractions and the variety of its offerings.

“The short distance between the port and the city is undoubtedly a key factor in encouraging cruise lines to extend their stay in Funchal, allowing passengers to enjoy the city by night,” added Cabaço.

In late November, the port won the “Best Cruise Terminal in the World for Sustainability” award from the World Cruise Awards. This follows Madeira winning “Europe’s Best Cruise Destination” in 2022 and 2023.

In 2023, Madeira welcomed 279 cruise ship calls and, for the first time, surpassed 624,000 passengers, a 51 percent increase compared to 2022.
