Swan Hellenic’s SH Diana had to cancel a visit to Antarctica due to technical issues with one of its engines.
After departing from South Africa on Nov. 13, 2024, the 2023-built vessel is offering a 20-night repositioning cruise to Argentina.
Sailing from Cape Town to Ushuaia, the original itinerary of the SH Diana included visits to Tristan da Cunha and South Georgia before spending three and a half days in Antarctica.
According to a report in Fortune, the ship experienced a malfunction in one of its two propulsion motors on the 14th day of its cruise.
As a result, the SH Diana cancelled its planned visit to the Antarctic Peninsula and is now sailing directly to Ushuaia.
In a statement to Fortune, Swan Hellenic’s CEO Andrea Zito said that the company is offering guests a very generous compensation pack.”
“Swan Hellenic would like to reiterate that we deeply regret that we had to change the itinerary due to the technical problems with the propeller drive,” he stated.
“We understand the disappointment of our guests who were looking forward to a taste of Antarctic experience,” Zito continued.
According to the report, Swan Hellenic is offering guests a 50 percent cash refund of the fare paid for the cruise.
Passengers will also receive future cruise credit equivalent to 65 percent of the amount paid for the original sailing, which can be used toward a new booking with the company.
“Swan Hellenic always strives to go above and beyond our guests’ expectations and looks forward to welcoming all our guests back onboard future expeditions,” he added.
The SH Diana is now scheduled to dock in Ushuaia earlier to undergo mechanical repairs, Fortune stated.
Set to spend most of the 2024-25 cruise season sailing to Antarctica, the 192-guest ship is scheduled to depart on its next expedition on Dec. 3, 2024.
