In Memory of Windstar’s Karl Andren

Windstar Founder

Karl G. Andren passed away on Feb. 7, 2023. He was among the founders and investors behind Windstar Sail Cruises in 1984, which launched the first of three sail-assisted vessels in 1986, the Wind Star. The Wind Song and the Wind Spirit followed in 1987 and 1988.

Built in France by Ateliers et Chantiers du Havre, the concept had been developed by Wartsila Shipyards, now known as Meyer-Turku, and at 440 feet the ships were the largest sailing cruise ships when they were introduced.

In 1988, Andren sold Windstar to Holland America Line.

Born in Mariehamn on September 24, 1946, he immigrated with his family to the United Sates in 1962.

Andren subsequently built up a successful shipping business, United Tank Containers, and also acquired Circle Line in New York, which he operated for more than three decades, along with World Yacht, a fleet of restaurant boats he acquired in 1988.
