MAN PrimeServ, the after-sales division of MAN Energy Solutions, has announced the development of a new injection pump for its MAN 32/40CD engine.
The new pump – called the Mk3 – offers more reliability and almost doubles the engine’s TBO (time between overhaul), compared to the market standard, a company statement has said.
“MAN 32/40CD fuel pumps can be upgraded through a simple change of existing pump element units, regulators and drives, and parts that you change during a standard maintenance,” said Stefan Eefting, senior vice president at MAN PrimeServ.
MAN’s redesign of the pump comes as maintenance professionals face more challenges concerning fuel injection during engine operation, associated with the increased diversity of fuel types including, from 2020, ultra-low-sulfur fuel oil.
These include the risk of lacquering the fuel-pump plunger and resultant sticking and malfunction. The new pump is more environmentally friendly and cost-effective than previous models and will be entirely manufactured in Germany.
During the pump’s development, MAN PrimeServ focused on replacing the conventional injection system. By implementing a sealing ring inside the pump barrel, it significantly reduced lacquering and all associated side effects. Similarly, the new design now avoids the mixing between fuel and lube oil, which enables their re-use and minimizes the need for their disposal.
MAN PrimeServ believes that customers investing in the new Mk3 pump will likely see a return on investment within two years.
