After 38 Drydocks in 2018, MJM Looks to Big 2019

“The Azamara Pursuit has been well documented, but we have actually completed 38 drydocks (in 2018),” said Colm Cunningham, contracts director for MJM Marine.

“These have taken us from China to Cadiz, from Grand Bahamas to Singapore, from Canada to Belfast and vary in scale and scope. Two of our most recent projects were on Norwegian Jewel, a 12-day drydock in Singapore involving 400 people; and a 20-day drydock for Oceania Cruises who are a new client for MJM Marine during which we refitted the Oceania Insignia.”

Heading into 2019, Cunningham said he was preparing for the Navigator of the Seas and Celebrity Millennium in January, in the 2019 Drydocking and Refurbishment Report by Cruise Industry News.

MJM Work

“Our approach has always been to build a partnership with our clients and become almost an extension of their refit divisions by providing a full turnkey solution including design, production, logistics, installation and cost management,” Cunningham said.

The company has been securing more multi-ship deals with cruise lines, he continued.

Every client, every project and every drydock is different so there is no “one size fits all” approach.

“MJM Marine’s expertise is in delivering turnkey solutions in all areas of a ship: cabins, public areas, external spaces, right through to shipyard management,” Cunningham said. “Every project is unique depending on client requirements and budgets but the one consistent is that MJM Marine will deliver. We pride ourselves on pushing design boundaries and are proud that we played a key role in delivering two high-profile new ships last year – the Symphony of the Seas and Celebrity Edge.”

Working on various projects, Cunningham and MJM have a set of standard lean management and manufacturing principles in place.

“If we are refitting cabins, we run a cabin train system. We plan around the number of cabins versus drydock days as to the strength of the team needed to complete and the number of cabins handed over daily.”

With a growing industry, MJM recently opened new offices in both Southampton, UK and in Poland and hired 60 new employees in 2018.
