Miyazaki Prefecture has three ports available for cruise visits. Aburatsu was upgraded in 2015 and can take Quantum-class ships, while Miyazaki fits boutique vessels and Hososhima accommodates ships up to 70,000 tons.

“This year, we’re seeing increasing numbers of calls from new cruise lines. The pier upgrade at Aburatsu has led to more calls,” said Yoshiaki Takatori, manager, tourism promotion department.

Among the new visitors was the Norwegian Joy calling at Aburatsu, while the Silver Shadow also made a first-time visit there.

At Hososhima, the SuperStar Virgo, Volendam and Amsterdam made inaugural calls earlier this year.

Takatori said he is expecting more calls for 2018, and Aburatsu is getting further bollard and tender upgrades to take Oasis-class vessels.

“The busiest months so far are May and October, but we are aiming to have more year-round calls. We have a relatively warm winter climate,” Takatori said.
