Cruise Lines Pitch Venice Alternative

The cruise industry is hoping to find an alternative route to open Venice back up to larger ships, according to a carefully prepared statement from CLIA Europe. Recent regulations have restricted ships sailing into Venice to be no more than 96,000 tons, causing a steep traffic drop for the port.

“Cruise companies have come together like never before to cooperate to finding a solution. They have simulated access via the Vittorio Emanuele III Canal at Marittima, an excellent passenger terminal in Italy and in the world, which remains fundamental,” the statement said.

Carnival, Royal Caribbean and MSC have all run simulations on large ships utilizing the route recently, the statement said, covering a variety of weather conditions. Carnival’s simulations were done at the state-of-the-art CSMART while others were done at another simulator center in Denmark.
