The big news in Corner Brook has been the start-up of a local cruise network.

“We have formed it here locally, pulling together tour operators, attractions and other organizations that have an interest (in the cruise industry),” said Nora Fever, business development manager for the Port of Corner Brook. “We are looking at what we can do better to maximize the opportunities, as well as coming up with new ideas for shore excursions and some new things downtown.”            

The committee had already put together an action plan and was busy meeting over the winter months to pursue a number of new initiatives.

“We are trying to look at it (cruise calls) with fresh eyes and figure out new and interesting things to do,” added Fever.

One of the more unique places on the Canada/New England route, the port booked 12 calls in 2015 and is expecting the same this year. Among the highlights last year was a pair of overnight visits by the Marco Polo.

The profile of ships calling has changed, however, with more vessels stopping in the port on trans-Atlantic runs.

2016 marks the 60th anniversary of the city, and Fever hopes some of the planned events can take place during cruise calls.

Passengers can look forward to a new arts center that has opened downtown, where they can interact in a live environment with artists.

There is a new high ropes course. Popular attractions continue to be Gros Morne National Park in addition to re-tracing Captain Cook’s exploration and footsteps in the area.

The port is busy pushing cruise call information out, giving local businesses a cruise package before the season, which includes information, signage and advice on what passengers are looking for.
