While expanding, Princess Cruises is building up its capacity in Australia and Asia, while effectively reducing its North American commitment, according to the 2015-2016 Cruise Industry News Annual Report.
In 2014, Princess’ estimated North American passenger capacity was more than 1.5 million passengers. Next year, it will have dropped to an estimated 1.3 million, with the balance dedicated to Australia, China and Japan.
Princess is already sailing the Sapphire on her second season summer season in China, before spending the winter out of Singapore, and has announced that its new, yet-unnamed 3,600-passenger ship, due to enter service in 2017, will be based in China year-round. Before then, the Golden Princess will join the Sapphire in China for the 2016 season.
In addition, Princess has three ships year-round in Australia, plus the Diamond alternating between Australia and Japan, and the Golden between Australia and China in 2016.
In 2015, Princess is the second largest brand in the Carnival group with 18 ships and an estimated passenger capacity of nearly 1.8 million. By 2022, Princess will have 19 ships, based on existing orders, and an estimated annual passenger capacity of more than 2 million.
