Metro Ports and Metro Cruise Garners PMA Safety Awards

At the recently held Pacific Maritime Association’s 65th Annual Safety Awards banquets in Southern California, Northern California, Washington and Oregon, Metro Cruise and Metro Ports were honored with numerous Accident Prevention and Reduced Injury Awards for their achievements in workplace safety in 2013.

Southern California

Local Awards

Metropolitan Stevedore Co. (Metro Ports)

–   2nd Place Class “B” Stevedore – LA/LB (100,000 to 400,000 man hours)

Metro Cruise

–   2nd Place Class “C” Stevedore – San Diego (10,000 to 100,000 man hours)

–   Zero Injury/Illness Rate – San Diego

Coast Award: Metro Cruise: 2-year ZERO Incident Rate – San Diego

Northern California

Local Awards

Metropolitan Stevedore Co. (Metro Ports)

–   1st Place Bulk Operations – San Francisco

–   Zero Injury Rate – San Francisco Bulk

–   Injury Reduction Rate – Stockton

Coast Awards

Washington

Coast Award: Metropolitan Stevedore Co. (Metro Ports): Zero Injury Rate  Anacortes

Metro Cruise President Stefano Borzone commented on the company’s overall accomplishments.

“We are pleased to share these accolades with our dedicated staff and labor force, which made these accomplishments possible,” Borzone said. “Metro’s Safety Department has successfully partnered with operations and support staff to create Metro’s new Safety Management System (SMS) for Team Metro. The safety team continues to focus on enhancing the company’s safety culture through awareness, information sharing, monitoring of regulatory changes, and the introduction of site-specific safety training programs.”

Metro Ports Acting Director of Safety and Environmental Compliance Eric Gustafson and Manager of Safety and Environmental Compliance Craig Kappe added their praise for the bulk and general cargo teams, with special recognition to Marty Miles and Leonard Brooks for taking the 1st Place Local and 2nd Place Coast Bulk awards. They also congratulated Tony Johnson, Tony Schlesinger and Shawn Bundy for the achievements in Anacortes.
