Ocean Countess Fire Under Control

According to Greek news reports, the fire that broke out aboard the laid-up Ocean Countess is now under control. The ship was anchored at Chalkis Shipyards at the time of the blaze.

The fire broke out on Saturday, and by Sunday, there were still some pockets of flames, although most of it had been extinguished with a strong response from the Greek fire department with a number of water-spraying boats.

Reports on scene were that the first caused major damage aboard the 1976-built ship, which has not been in service since a 2012 charter to Cruise and Maritime Voyages.

Five crew members aboard were evacuated safely. An investigation has begun as to the cause of the fire.
