According to sources in Europe, Star Cruises is apparently in serious talks with a major European shipyard regarding a newbuild order.

The Asian brand has been rebuilding its product since the recession, and now operates some five ships in the Asia-Pacific region, having most recently refurbished the ex-Norwegian Dream, turning it into the SuperStar Gemini and going after a growing Chinese market.

Still the leading player in the Asia region, Star is facing ever-increasing competition in China and other markets from the likes of Royal Caribbean International, Costa, Princess and more.

Star last took delivery of a newbuild from Meyer Werft in 1999, when the SuperStar Virgo was delivered.

Star also ordered more ships at the turn of the century, which became the Norwegian Star and Norwegian Dawn and were delivered to Norwegian Cruise Line in 2001 and 2002.

While shipyards are always engaged in talks with cruise lines, Star has been thought to have been focusing on its own profitability in recent years, while also reducing its investment in Norwegian Cruise Line.

Owner Genting has furthermore been focused on land-based resorts and casinos globally.

Meyer Werft and Star Cruises did not return requests for comment.
