Piraeus Port Expansion Project Begins

A major expansion to the Port of Piraeus is officially underway, according to port officials, with a price tag of some 120 million euro.

The expansion of the passenger port has been given the green light.

Traffic is up some 151 percent over the last decade, leading to the decision to upgrade the port to accept the latest classes of megaships.

“The project will have internal quay walls of 1.000m, useable depth of 18m, breakwaters of 1.100m and land area of 140.000m2,” added a release from the port authority.

The project will be completed in 23 months from the signing of the contract, with major funding and backing from the EU.
