Copenhagen Malmö Port Expanding

  • March 7, 2013

Copenhagen PortCopenhagen Malmö Port is expanding and investing both in the Danish capital Copenhagen and Swedish city Malmö just across the sea from Copenhagen.

The two ports are expanding in order to meet the future demands, and a new pier and three new terminal buildings are being built in the Port of Copenhagen.

In the Port of Malmö, a 2,400 sqm warehouse is being converted into a cruise terminal and will open by May 2014.

This year a new pier for cruise ships is being built in Port of Copenhagen.

The pier is scheduled to be completed this year. At the same time, three terminal buildings, each of 3,300 sqm with green roofs, are under construction. Each terminal building will have 1,800 sqm for passenger handling and 1,500 sqm for luggage handling.

The terminal building will be ready to welcome passengers in the Danish capital from the 1st of May 2014, making the new pier ready for the season 2014.

This expansion of the Port of Copenhagen is being done in order to meet the future demands with the steady increase in calls and to develop the facilities even further.

The pier will allow space for three large cruise ships along a 1,100 meter long and 70 meters wide dedicated cruise quay.

The southernmost part will be built on the existing coastline, while the remainder will require landfill.

Just across the sea in Malmö, Sweden, a 2.400 sqm warehouse is being converted into a cruise terminal in order to handle 10 turnaround calls from Pullmantur who are moving the Empres from Copenhagen to Malmö, where they are also going to use Malmö Airport as gateway for their 3 Boeing747 flights. This new terminal will open in May 2013.

Copenhagen set a new record in 2012 with 372 calls, 840,000 visiting passengers and 230,000 crew members.

“We’re looking forward to quickly gaining access to the new quay and terminals which will enable us to give an even higher service to ships and passengers. And at the same time, the solutions for cars, buses and taxi service will become even more efficient,” said COO Arnt Moller Pedersen from Copenhagen Malmö Port, who is responsible for cruise calls in Copenhagen and Malmö.

The total investment for the new facilities will be about DKK600 million (approximately $100 million).

In 2013 more than 360 calls on 70 different ocean cruise vessels from 37 international shipping companies will visit the Port of Copenhagen and the Port of Malmö.

The 2013 season being kicked off by a very early call by the AIDAstella on March 18. The main cruise season will end on October 22 with a call from the Marco Polo, but 5 ships will call again in December when some of the lines deploys their vessels on Christmas markets cruises, mainly from the UK.
