  • November 17, 2012

Fans sailing aboard the second TCM Classic Cruise this January will be treated to an abundance of movie memories, including a slate of great films; conversations with classic film stars Debbie Reynolds, Mickey Rooney, Arlene Dahl, Sally Ann Howes and Norman Lloyd; a collection of original TCM documentary series and specials; a pair of silent classics, presented with live musical accompaniment by the Alloy Orchestra; a special tribute to the Nicholas Brothers by the Film Forum’s Bruce Goldstein; discussions about leading ladies and leading men, with author and Women in Film founder Sue Cameron; an overview of the life and work of legendary caricaturist Al Hirschfeld by Hirschfeld archivist David Leopold; a collection of Joan Crawford’s home movies, presented by her grandson Casey LaLonde; an entire night of events celebrating the Jazz Age; trivia contests; and much more.

TCM hosts Robert Osborne and Ben Mankiewicz will welcome thousands of TCM fans for the five-night voyage to Grand Cayman and Cozumel, taking place Jan. 21-26 aboard the luxurious Celebrity Constellation.

Below is the programming slate for the 2013 TCM Classic Cruise. Complete details and schedules are available at the TCM Classic Cruise website at http://www.tcmcruise.com.

2013 TCM Classic Cruise

Debbie Reynolds

Oscar®- and Emmy®-nominated actress Debbie Reynolds will be on hand for discussions prior to a screening of what has been called the greatest movie musical of all time, Singin’ in the Rain (1952); Richard Brooks’ blue-collar drama The Catered Affair (1956): and the ebullient musical The Unsinkable Molly Brown (1964).

Mickey Rooney

Academy Award ®-winning actor Mickey Rooney will participate in a discussion prior to a screening of the high-stepping musical Strike Up the Band (1940); Norman Taurog’s Boys Town (1938), with Spencer Tracy; Clarence Brown’s National Velvet (1944), with Elizabeth Taylor; and the boxing classic Requiem for a Heavyweight (1962).

Arlene Dahl

Legendary Hollywood beauty and MGM star Arlene Dahl will have discussions about her films, Woman’s World (1954), Jean Negulesco’s sophisticated look at big business, and Journey to the Center of the Earth (1959), the lavish Jules Verne fantasy from producer-screenwriter Charles Brackett.

Sally Ann Howes

Tony ®-nominated actress and singer Sally Ann Howes will introduce her unforgettable performance as the beautiful Truly Scrumptious in the Richard and Roger Sherman musical Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968), with Dick Van Dyke.

Norman Lloyd

Actor, director and Emmy ®-nominated producer of stage, film and television, Norman Lloyd will chat prior to screenings of Lewis Milestone’s humanist war drama A Walk in the Sun (1945) and Alfred Hitchcock’s classic thriller Saboteur (1942). Lloyd will also sit down participate in an extended hour-long conversation with Bruce Goldstein.

Silent Classics with the Alloy Orchestra

The Alloy Orchestra, a three-man musical ensemble that has written and performed live accompaniment to classic silent films for more than two decades, will provide the music for a screening of the recently restored edition of Fritz Lang’s Metropolis (1927), which made its North American debut at the 2010 TCM Classic Film Festival. The group will also accompany a presentation of Josef von Sternberg’s gripping gangster saga Underworld (1927).

A Tribute to the Nicholas Brothers + Stormy Weather (1943)

Bruce Goldstein , creator of the award-winning repertory programming at New York’s Film Forum, will present a special tribute to the Nicholas Brothers, the famed dance duo popular in the 1930s and ’40s. The special presentation includes film clips from the brothers’ remarkable career, along with home movies, interviews and shared personal stories. Goldstein will also introduce a screening of Stormy Weather (1943), the all-black musical featuring such legendary stars as Lena Horne, Fats Waller, Bill “Bojangles” Robinson, Cab Calloway and, of course, The Nicholas Brothers.

Hollywood as Seen by Al Hirschfeld

The name Al Hirschfeld has virtually been synonymous with Broadway since his first theatrical drawing was published in December 1926. But by then, he was a six-year veteran of movie studio publicity and art departments, having already worked for Goldwyn, Universal, Pathé, Selznick, Fox, First National, and Warner Brothers. “I lived in the movies,” he says of his early years, and it was in films that he discovered his gift of caricature. Hirschfeld supplied iconic artwork for posters, programs, heralds, trade ads, and billboards, for every studio in Hollywood’s golden Age and beyond. From The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari to Gangs of New York, Hirschfeld not only drew iconic films, but often visited sets to get material for his work. Hirschfeld archivist David Leopold will weave stories together with many wonderful images from the Hirschfeld Archive to trace Hirschfeld’s nine decades of film art, covering the transition from silent to sound, from black and white to color and from the studio system to the world of independents.

Joan Crawford Home Movies + Mildred Pierce (1945)

Joan Crawford’s grandson, Casey LaLonde, will host and narrate a collection of home movies featuring the legendary actress. He will also introduce a screening of Mildred Pierce (1945), the Michael Curtiz film noir that earned her an Oscar® for Best Actress.

“The Jazz Age” Theme Night

This year, the TCM Classic Cruise will transport guests back to the era of flappers and speakeasies with an entire night celebrating the Jazz Age. The fun will include a 1920s cocktail tasting; guest vocalists, musicians and dancers; a live orchestra providing tunes from the period; and screenings of Billy Wilder’s legendary comedy Some Like It Hot (1959) and Raoul Walsh’s searing crime drama The Roaring Twenties (1939).

Leading Ladies and Leading Men

Sue Cameron , author and co-founder of Women in Film, will host a pair of one-hour presentations, one on Hollywood’s greatest leading ladies and another on leading men.

Additional Films

In addition to its star-studded screenings and special presentations, the TCM Classic Cruise will feature a packed lineup of film favorites such as Preston Sturges’ The Lady Eve (1941), Frank Capra’s State of the Union (1948), John Ford’s The Searchers (1956) and Oscar®-winning drama How Green Was My Valley (1941).

Specials and Series

The TCM Classic Cruise will feature an ongoing slate of original series and specials from TCM’s nearly 20-year history. The lineup includes all seven episodes of TCM’s 2010 series Moguls & Movie Stars: A History of Hollywood, narrated by Oscar® winner Christopher Plummer; the most recent TCM’s special, A Night at the Movies: Hollywood Goes to Washington; a special sneak peek at Kim Novak: Live from the TCM Classic Film Festival, which is set to premiere on TCM in March; and the in-depth interview special Private Screenings: Ernest Borgnine. The slate also features such memorable documentaries as Baby Peggy: The Elephant in the Room (2012); Fragments from the Academy Archives (2011), Metropolis Refound (2010), 1939: Hollywood’s Greatest Year (2009), Public Enemies: The Golden Age of the Gangster Film (2008), Billy Wilder Speaks (2006) and The Dick Cavett Show: Alfred Hitchcock (1970 & ’72).
