In a prepared statement, AMS said that Norwegian Cruise Line will receive its Quality Ship Management Award for implementation of quality controls systems that enhance crewmember efficiency and which reduce marine casualties.

AMS praised Norwegian for its adherence to safety standards and for its safety culture concept, which involves management in constantly communicating the safety message to Norwegian’s team.

The Safety Thought of the Day changes automatically every 24 hours. It is communicated daily to Norwegian’s team and also at the start and at the end of every meeting, according to AMS. Personal praise for good safety practices and a “no blame” safety concept are a high priority, the organization said, as are monthly recorded safety meetings with full department involvement. Computer based training modules are all part of implementation of the Safety Culture Concept.

Also, according to AMS, Norwegian’s Kaizen Project has been developed to assist team members in working efficiently while maintaining or increasing their level of safety. Crew members are invited to assess the way tasks are performed and to develop a more methodical approach. This has resulted in the introduction of many better practices, which have increased efficiency and overall safety. Norwegian’s safety programs are very popular and continue to receive positive feedback from all of Norwegian’s departments.

AMS is a New York based maritime consortium, comprised of more than 400 vessel owners and operators and the leading maritime industry association on regulatory compliance in the United States, announced the winners of its 2012 Safety Awards. The venue for the AMS annual membership meeting and safety awards dinner was the prestigious Yale University Club in New York City.
