Hans-Joachim Otto to open SMM and gmec 2010 on September 6

  • August 31, 2010

The 24th international shipbuilding fair SMM 2010, shipbuilding, machinery & marine technology, international trade fair hamburg, and the first gmec 2010, global maritime environmental congress will be opened by Hans-Joachim Otto, Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology, and Federal Government Coordinator for the Maritime Industry. This official opening will be held at CCH-Congress Center Hamburg at 19:00 on Monday, 6 September. Other speakers at the opening ceremony, with some 700 invited guests from industry and government, will be Maria Damanaki, Commissioner for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries European Commission; Senator Ian Karan, Hamburg Minister of Economics and Labour; Efthimios E. Mitropoulos, Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO); and Bernd Aufderheide, President and CEO of Hamburg Messe und Congress (HMC).

SMM 2010, the world’s leading shipbuilding trade fair, will present a total of 2,003 exhibitors from 58 nations on 90,000 square metres at the Hamburg Messe site, in eleven exhibition halls plus the outdoor areas. Presentations include technology for the shipbuilding industry, marine equipment suppliers, and offshore technology. There will be more exhibitors than at any previous SMM.
1,304 exhibitors from abroad will use SMM 2010 as an international market place, and a total of 30 national pavilions will be presenting at the 24th international shipbuilding fair. New exhibitors at SMM 2010 include for example companies from Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, the Faroes and Papua New Guinea.

Major issues in the shipbuilding industry are protection of the environment and combating climate change. Thus the first international industry-wide conference on maritime environmental protection will be held at CCH-Congress Center Hamburg on 7 and 8 September on the occasion of SMM, that is gmec – global maritime environmental congress. High-ranking representatives of IMO, the EU, various governments, port authorities, shipyards, classification societies and the shipbuilding industry will be there, to take stock of what has been achieved so far and to discuss further goals which may set the course for the whole of the industry. The focus of content is on the challenges in environmental protection faced by the maritime industry, and the opportunities arising for further industry development as a result of environmental action.

The five panels will be chaired by five high-ranking Chairmen: David Dingle, CEO Carnival UK; Dr. Hermann J. Klein, Chairman of the classification society Germanischer Lloyd; Spyros Polemis, Chairman International Chamber of Shipping; Emanuele Grimaldi, CEO Grimaldi Group; and Tom Boardley, Marine Director Lloyd’s Register of Shipping. The three main Chairmen of gmec are Micky Arison, Chairman & CEO Carnival Corporation; Spyros Polemis; and Dr. Corrado Antonini, Chairman Fincantieri.

Other thematic focal points of this year’s SMM are Finance and Offshore.

One of the most important symposia is the international Ship Finance Forum, with leading speakers, to be held on 6 September, the day before the start of the fair. This is the third time the Forum is being held, hosted by Financial Times Deutschland and Hamburg Messe. Its overall theme this year is “The Future of Ship Finance – Crises and Chances”.

The first SMM Offshore Dialogue will be held at SMM 2010; this two-day event on 8 and 9 September is hosted by Hamburg Messe with substantial support from the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi). Its subjects are “Offshore Oil & Gas”, “Deep Sea Mining” and “Offshore Wind Energy”, and it addresses the promising offshore market, which is becoming more and more important for shipbuilding and marine equipment suppliers.

All in all, the strong supporting programme of SMM 2010 comprises a total of some 150 workshops, symposia and conferences. Further events include the CIMAC Circle 2010 (International Council on Combustion Engines), which meets this year under the general heading of “Total Cost of Ownership of Marine Propulsion Engines”; and the Marine Coatings Conference on 8 and 9 September. Recruitment of young talents is a subject taken up again this year by the German Engineering Federation VDMA and the German Shipbuilding and Ocean Industries Association VSM with the slogan “Think Ing”, to give school leavers extensive information on engineering careers in the shipbuilding industry.

The 24th International Shipbuilding Fair SMM 2010 will be held at the Hamburg Fair site, open daily from 9:30 to 18:00 from 7 to 10 September. The printed catalogue (including SMM Green Shipping Guide 2010) costs EUR 28.
