More To See and Do in San Diego

  • April 30, 2010

According to the San Diego Convention and Visitors Bureau there is a host of new things to see and do in this Southern California town and cruise port:

San Diego Sky Tours, a new sightseeing tour company, offers 30-minute or one-hour aerial sightseeing tours on a six-passenger Cessna airplane that highlight the city’s popular attractions and neighborhoods. Guests can choose from four different tour options, The SoCal Classic, The San Diego Flyer, Sunset Escape and The North County Medley.

Jogging Tours, a new tour company in San Diego, offers visitors a chance to see some of the city’s popular sights and scenic beauty while on the run.  Guests can choose from four tour options that vary in setting, cost, length and level of difficulty; they include a 6.1-mile Coronado tour, 8.4-mile Downtown tour, 3.5-mile Old Town State Historic Park tour and 10-mile Uptown Footbridge tour. Each tour is led by a trained runner who explains the history and key landmarks along each route. Jogging Tours are offered daily and can be customized upon request.

Ivan Stewart’s Electric Bike Center recently opened in Little Italy in downtown San Diego. Guests can rent electric bikes to explore the city in a new and environmentally friendly way. The Bike Center offers two-hour, half-day and full-day rental packages that include an electric bike, helmet and lock.

The San Diego Museum of Art (SDMA) in Balboa Park will present a new exhibition, Toulouse-Lautrec’s Paris: Selections from the Baldwin M. Baldwin Collection, July 11 – December 12. The first all-inclusive display in San Diego in 20 years, Toulouse-Lautrec’s Paris will provide a last look at the museum’s collection of nearly 100 Lautrec paintings, drawings, prints and posters before curators begin to conserve and digitize these important works.

On May 29, 2010, SeaWorld San Diego will debut a new theatrical dolphin show, Blue Horizons, which will feature energetic bottlenose dolphins, powerful pilot whales, a colorful array of exotic birds and acrobatic performers.

In June 2010, LEGOLAND California in Carlsbad will open the world’s first LEGO-themed water park. Geared towards families with children ages 2 – 12, the 5.5-acre LEGOLAND Water Park will feature wet-and-wild climbing structures, a six-person raft slide, tube slides, body slides, a lazy river, hands-on toddler areas and an area where kids can customize their own soft LEGO® rafts.

Four new animal habitats have been added to the Journey into Africa tram tour at the San Diego Zoo’s Wild Animal Park in San Diego’s North County. Along the tour route, editions include a five-acre flamingo exhibit where more than 150 of these bright birds reside; a 20,800-square foot habitat for wattled cranes, Egyptian geese and yellow-billed storks; a 20,800-square foot  habitat for steenbok, duiker and Soemerring’s gazelle, and a five-acre rocky desert habitat for Somali wild ass and Barbary sheep.

And this spring and summer, the San Diego International Airport welcomes a handful of new flights servicing San Diego from various cities in the United States, Canada and Mexico. New flights include:
• a second daily flight between San Diego and Boston begins May 1 on Jet Blue;
• year-round service between San Diego and St. Louis begins May 9 on Southwest Airlines;
• seasonal flights between San Diego and Atlanta and Milwaukee begin May 27 on airTran;
• year-round service between San Diego and Honolulu begins June 3 on Delta;
• seasonal flights between San Diego and Maui begin June 18 on Hawaiian Airlines;
• year-round service between San Diego and Toronto begins June 17 on Air Canada;
