Port Everglades to Celebrate the Naming of 2 Ships and Welcome 3 New Ships

This cruise season, Port Everglades will host naming ceremonies for the world’s largest and most revolutionary cruise ship, Royal Caribbean International’s 5,400-guest Oasis of the Seas, and one of the world’s most luxurious cruise ships, Silversea Cruises’ new flagship, the 540-guest Silver Spirit.

“It is always an honor for a cruise port to host the naming of a new cruise ship, and this year we are doubly honored to host new ships that are already making headlines,” said Port Everglades Director Phil Allen.

Oasis of the Seas will be named at the Port in November 2009 and Silver Spirit in January 2010. In addition, three new cruise ships will make their U.S. debuts at Port Everglades this winter cruise season, including MSC Cruises’ MSC Poesia, Seabourn Cruise Line’s Seabourn Odyssey, and Celebrity Cruises’ Celebrity Equinox.

Port Everglades will also welcome another of Seabourn Cruise Line’s luxury ships, Seabourn Spirit, for the first time on November 27, 2009. And, Royal Caribbean International’s 73,817-gross-registered-ton (grt) Grandeur of the Seas will replace Enchantment of the Seas for year-round sailings from the Port on April 19, 2010.

The MSC Poesia

When it arrives on November 10, 2009, MSC Cruises’ MSC Poesia will be the first of the new ships to sail from Port Everglades this winter. The 93,300-grt, 2,550-passenger Italian cruise ship is the third and newest ship in MSC Cruises’ Musica-class of ships. The ship is appointed with a spectacular waterfall with bridges in the foyer, a Zen garden in the sushi bar, a serene 13,000 square- foot spa, and the latest eco-technology to safeguard the environment without compromising comfort and luxury. Suites and staterooms are spacious and elegant, most with private balconies. Guests can enjoy a wine tasting bar or casual outdoor Mojito bar and movies under the stars on an immense screen by the pool. And for the kids, the MSC Poesia offers a Stone Age dinosaur-themed play area.

The Seabourn Odyssey

Seabourn Cruise Line’s Seabourn Odyssey, the smallest cruise vessel launched this year worldwide, will also make its U.S. debut at Port Everglades on November 10, 2009. The ultra-luxury cruise ship will sail on its maiden Caribbean voyage on November 14, 2009, and sails on 12- and 14-night Caribbean voyages from Port Everglades through the end of the year. A 108-day World Odyssey voyage starts from Port Everglades on January 5, 2010. The 32,000-grt vessel, built by T. Mariotti of Genoa, Italy, accommodates 450 guests in 225 luxury suites, 90 percent with verandas, offering one of the highest space-per-guest ratios in the industry with highly personalized service. Odyssey features the largest spa on any luxury vessel, four restaurants and a host of luxury amenities. Odyssey is the first of three new vessels Seabourn is building, a 216 percent increase in capacity for the line, with Seabourn Sojourn launching in June 2010 and a third new-build in 2011.

The Celebrity Equinox

Celebrity Cruises’ newest Solstice-class ship, the 2,850-guest Celebrity Equinox, will arrive at Port Everglades on November 19, 2009, for its U.S. debut. Playing off the success of the launch of her sister ship, Celebrity Solstice, which was named at Port Everglades in 2008, the newest vessel in Celebrity’s fleet will also offer AquaClass staterooms designed to offer a spa-focused ambiance, as well as several indulgent new offerings in the onboard spa. Celebrity’s AquaClass veranda staterooms, introduced as a Solstice-class exclusive feature, are located in close proximity to the ships’ two-story spa, known as “AquaSpa by Elemis.” AquaClass is the only stateroom category in Celebrity’s fleet that offers no third- and fourth-guest berthing. Like Celebrity Solstice, Celebrity Equinox presents guests with brand-defining, industry-first features, including a half-acre Lawn Club with real, growing grass; a glassblowing show and studio developed and presented in collaboration with The Corning Museum of Glass; 10 unrivaled dining venues, and widely varied entertainment, including shows with breathtaking aerial acts.

The Oasis of the Seas

When it begins its regular seven-night cruises on December 5, 2009, Oasis of the Seas will be the largest and most revolutionary cruise ship in the world. An architectural marvel at sea, it will span 16 decks, encompass 225,282 grt, carry 5,400 guests at double occupancy, and feature 2,700 staterooms. Oasis of the Seas will be the first ship to tout the cruise line’s new neighborhood concept of seven distinct themed areas, which include Central Park, Boardwalk, the Royal Promenade, the Pool and Sports Zone, Vitality at Sea Spa and Fitness Center, Entertainment Place and Youth Zone. Oasis of the Seas will sail from Port Everglades every Saturday year-round. The second Oasis-class vessel, Allure of the Seas, is scheduled to begin sailing from Port Everglades every Sunday year-round beginning in Fall 2010. Port Everglades has expanded a passenger terminal specifically designed to accommodate cruise ships of the size and scope of Royal Caribbean’s Oasis-class ships. This new Cruise Terminal 18 is slated to open on November 4, 2009.

The Silver Spirit

Silversea’s newest all-suite ship, Silver Spirit, built at Fincantieri’s Ancona shipyard, will be named at Port Everglades on January 21, 2010. The 540-guest, 36,000-grt, ultra-luxury vessel is being designed by renowned Italian architect Giacomo Mortola. Silver Spirit’s interiors hint at a sophisticated 1930s Art Deco ambiance. The ship also incorporates the latest innovations and advance maritime technology. There will also be several significant enhancements from the cruise line’s other ultra-luxury ships, including a new supper club, an Asian-themed restaurant and an expanded spa facility. With a total of 270 all ocean-view suites, the new ship will maintain the line’s reputation for intimate, yet spacious ships and will increase the number of accommodations in the most popular suite categories — 26 Silver Suites and 222 Veranda Suites. There will also be six Grand Suites and two Owner’s Suites. All but 14 suites will have verandas.
