The Tampa Port Authority is pleased to announce that one of its latest construction projects, a 700+ space, multi-level parking garage, has been recognized with an award of honor by the Orlando chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA).

Winning in the AIA competition’s “unbuilt” category, the garage project was designed by the Orlando firm, HKS Architects, Inc. Construction is scheduled to begin in early summer, at a cost of about $13 million. Expected completion date is expected during summer 2010. Some of the judge’s notable remarks centered around the garage’s striking visual appeal, user-friendly amenities and selection of materials contributing to the overall aesthetic. The garage is designed for multiple operating flexibility, from valet and limousine parking to patron self-parking.

“We are delighted that this beautiful parking garage concept has been honored with such a prestigious design award,” Richard Wainio, Tampa’s port director and CEO, said. “We owe thanks to the City of Tampa and the talented architects for their respective contributions to the success of the project. When completed, the garage and its amenities will add to the beauty of the Channelside district and strengthen the area’s allure as a major downtown attraction,” he said.
