Majestic America No More; Delta Queen May Sail Again

Having completed the 2008 cruise season, Majestic America Line will not be operating cruises in 2009 or beyond, according to a statement on its website, which also notes that ”several credible parties have expressed an interest in acquiring some and/or all assets of Majestic America Line and building upon our efforts in delivering unique cruise experiences that celebrate American history, culture and our magnificent waterways.”

Meanwhile, the 1927-built 176-passenger Delta Queen steamboat has been nominated as an endangered American historic place and thus has a chance of surviving and continuing sailing.
Last year, Congress removed an exemption, which allowed the all-wooden vessel to sail with more than 50 passengers. Majestic was thus forced to retire the Delta Queen.

In addition, also in the three-boat river fleet, the Mississippi Queen is reportedly gutted for restoration. That leaves the recently-built 420-passenger American Queen.
