Continuing the strong commitment by MSC Cruises to safeguard the environment, MSC Sinfonia recently entered into dry dock for the installation of new “clean cruising” equipment and systems.
“The work on MSC Sinfonia represents MSC Cruises’ continued commitment to maintain the highest environmental standards not only for the new ships under construction but also for all our ships in the fleet,” says Richard E. Sasso, president and CEO of MSC Cruises (USA), Inc.
The first phase of the work on MSC Sinfonia includes sandblasting the keel and recoating the ship’s underwater hull area with silicon paint, an outstanding non-toxic material that respects the marine environment. Following the thorough sandblasting, the keel received an epoxy anticorrosive application before application of Intersleek 970, an environmentally friendly, inert marine coating material that contains no active ingredient. The new hull coating fully complies with current international IMO Antifouling Systems standards.
At 58,625 gross rated tons, MSC Sinfonia has 777 staterooms with a capacity of 1,544 guests (double occupancy). It is equipped with engines that use low sulphur fuel and utilizes state-of-the-art waste disposal equipment to reduce trash generated onboard to ash for clean disposal or to process recyclable materials for transfer to recycling centers on shore.
