Update: Minor Oasis Fire at Aker Yards Finland

A small fire forced workers to temporarily evacuate Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas, under construction at Aker Yards Finland on Thursday.

The brief blaze broke out in an air conditioning room at the aft of the ship when sparks from a welding torch landed on plastic covering new equipment, said Cynthia Martinez, a Royal Caribbean Cruises spokeswoman.

The ship was not damaged, Martinez said, and the fire would not affect the construction schedule.

The fire was quickly put out, said Toivo Ilvonen, Aker Yards’ project manager for the ship, and workers returned “after less than one hour.”

“I wouldn’t even call that a fire. It was some square meter of plastic that burned,” Ilvonen said.
