DNV Planning a Greener Cruise Industry

Their task during a six-week cross-disciplinary internship programme, “The year 2030 green cruise experience”, has been to design an environmentally friendly cruise concept where everything from leisure activities to the vessel itself is green and healthy.

The students come from China, France, Mexico, Norway and Sweden. They have different educational backgrounds from Scandinavian universities.

Drawing inspiration from business areas within and outside the DNV organization, the team suggest integration of cutting-edge technologies to reduce the cruise sector’s impact on our vulnerable planet.

Reducing the environmental footprints

With the objective of reducing the environmental footprints to a minimum, the team has designed a competitive concept based on several bold designs.

Their concept provides a convenient, flexible and green cruise experience as an alternative to aviation and to eliminate the moving stress and annoying scheduling.

High-speed ships serve floating islands

A high-speed ship is the centre of the concept. What’s really new is that the ship consists of many modules in cabin size, and these modules can be taken out of the ship and integrated freely onto the different destinations.

In addition to the ship, the team suggests a concept of a floating island. It consists of flexible modules forming an ever-changing, exciting new destination with almost every attraction the passengers could want. It can be placed in every corner of the world and be the main destination itself as well as serving as a hub for coastal cruises to nearby locations.

For cruise line companies, the flexibility of both the ships and the island enables them to generate more business opportunities and reduce risk.

Clean energy from floating power stations

To make the concept as environmentally friendly as possible, a network of Floating Power Stations in the sea generates clean energy from the wave, wind, solar and bio-energy.

During the internship the students are learning the most up-to-date technologies. Other leading companies including StatoilHydro, Wallenius Wilhelmsen, Scanship, Höegh, Tillberg Design and Elkem Solar have been invited to share their knowledge with the team. In addition, the team will leverage their own imagination, creativity, knowledge and ambition to realize a brand new picture in their minds.

Says DNV’s director of corporate HR and SHE, Cecilie Heuch: “This internship programme also allows a group of promising young students to obtain a deeper understanding of DNV. By participating in a project that mirrors DNV’s operations across business areas, we hope that they not only apply what they have learnt during their studies but will be inspired to consider DNV as a viable and rewarding career path.”

The team will present the results to DNV managers and other industrial leaders on 4 August. Besides, a series of result including a brochure, a technical note, a movie clip and a 3D animation are prepared by the team to provide a comprehensive picture of their results and for future development.
