What’s New in Grenada for 2008

  • March 13, 2008

Grenada is currently experiencing many exciting developments that are expected to positively affect the country’s tourism industry in 2008 and beyond.  Visitors are sure to benefit from the following transformations taking place in the areas of accommodations, attractions, transportation, and infrastructure.

PORT LOUIS GRENADA

The Port Louis Marina and Creole Village was officially opened at a grand ceremony on January 4, 2008, days after the news of a major joint venture arrangement between the de Savary Group and the largest marina developer in the world, Camper & Nicholsons.  In the new partnership, Camper & Nicholsons will invest 24 million US dollars to market and develop the Port Louis Marina into one of the best and most exclusive in the world.

The Victory Bar & Grill II, which has been the first major development to take place at the Port Louis Marina, has been fully operational since May 2007.

MOUNT CINNAMON PROJECT

Grenada’s first boutique villa resort – Mount Cinnamon Grenada – was officially opened on March 1, 2008 with 21 beautifully appointed, fully furnished and tastefully equipped one, two and three bedroom suites and villas, the minimum of which is over 1200 square feet in size.

Located on the famous Grand Beach, all accommodations enjoy spectacular views over the beach and the Caribbean Sea.  The resort also offers a beachside cabana club with numerous water sports, tennis, spa treatments, swimming pool and gymnasium.

The popular contemporary restaurant – Savvy’s – has been open and functional since June 2007.  The menu offers exciting dishes fusing the best of the Mediterranean with local Grenadian vegetables, flavours and spices.

LE PHARE BLEU MARINA & RESORT

Le Phare Bleu is a new marina and resort situated on the picturesque south coast of Grenada, opened in June 2007.  Owned and operated by a German-speaking Swiss couple, this beachfront resort is surrounded by lush and exotic landscaping.  It is comprised of 13 units, tastefully designed with a perfect blend of modern and traditional styles.  There is also a luxury two bedroom, two bathroom villa incorporating a unique plunge pool within the interior of the building. Other features include a swimming pool and lounge bar, together with car hire and a mini-market.

Service facilities are available to the yachting community on-site and the water sports facilities include sailing, snorkeling and wake boarding.

The resort will be complete by the end of March 2008 and is best suited for those independent travelers with a sense of adventure, who enjoy an active holiday experience, but do not want to miss out on high level comfort and service.

GRAND HARBOUR WATERFRONT RESIDENCES

Grand Harbour is a collection of luxury waterfront residences located on Egmont Point, a spectacular peninsular on the south coast of Grenada.  The development is designed so that every apartment features magnificent views of the bay and the mountains of Grand Etang, the main mountain range of Grenada.

Contemporary and Caribbean describe the feel of the resort, as well as the refined interior designs.  Grand Harbour offers the very latest in resort design and infrastructure.  It offers 26 fully serviced private slips, a mega yacht berth, swimming pool, day spa and fitness center, restaurant, bar and an impressively equipped water sports club.

The project began in May 2007 with the commencement of civil works at the site and the opening of its Sales Office, followed by the launch of the development in August 2007.  It is comprised of 54 units of three-bedroom waterfront town houses, three-bedroom waterfront apartments and two- bedroom hillside apartments.

Grand Harbour is due for completion by December 2009.

BACOLET BAY RESORT AND SPA

Set in a perfect location bordering lush rainforest and warm seas with white sand beaches, Bacolet Bay Resort and Spa is set in a private area within a quintessential bay that fronts the Caribbean and offers spectacular sea and mountain views, whilst being conveniently close to the capital, St. George’s.

The luxurious resort will spread over 41 acres of tropical gardens and contain a mix of apartments, villas and hotel cottages offering state-of-the-art facilities including a spa and fitness center, tennis courts, beachfront bars and restaurants.  Bacolet Bay will have 215 units comprised of two-bedroom apartments, two-bedroom villas, one-bedroom villas, one-bedroom cottages and four four-bedroom villas.

This five-star luxury project was launched in February 2007 and construction is on schedule.  The completion date for the entire project is targeted for the first half of 2011, but phase one is expected to be completed by the end of 2009.

LEVERA RESORT AND SPA

The express wish of the new owners of this project is not just to provide a long term legacy to the people of Grenada, but to create a world-class luxury eco-resort, meeting or surpassing all industry best practices for environmentally sound design and construction.

Levera will have 60 villas ranging from one-bedroom to three-bedroom.  The project will be low-density and, in keeping with its ecological goals, will focus on the preservation of the Levera National Park, Levera Beach and the protection of the turtle breeding habitat.  Several hundred trees will be replanted along the beachfront and steps have also been taken to reduce the negative impact of invasive plants which took hold in areas disturbed by the previous developers.

Construction of the infrastructure will begin in mid-2008 and this will be followed by the construction of the hotel and villas. The current schedule shows the hotel being completed by late 2009.

This will be the first significant hotel in the north of the island, providing many important opportunities for employment and the provision of local goods and services.  The project’s commitment to the conservation of the local environment is one of its most defining characteristics.

THE POINT

Located on the south coast of Grenada on a captivating two-acre waterfront lot of land in the quiet residential area of Fort Jeudy, this property has two unspoilt white sand beaches and edges turquoise sheltered waters, offering protected swimming, snorkeling with the safety of an outer reef.

This 15-room resort, which has been under construction for the past year, will offer, on completion, a high level of finish and modern architectural designs utilizing the best of the Caribbean, Mexican and regional design influences.  Its design has incorporated many ecological ideas to reduce the impact on the eco-system through the use of solar water heating, solar lighting and an efficient water irrigation system.

The Point will have a restaurant, bar and lounge as well as a holistic spa. The completion date for this project is earmarked for the first quarter in 2009.

GRENADA SEAFARIS

In today’s demanding and competitive tourism market, Grenada Seafaris is offering a service that will meet the expectations of the most discerning passenger.

A new and unique service to visitors and residents alike, this family-owned and operated business offers a variety of island boat tours that highlight the concept of shoreline sightseeing and showcase the history, ecology and geography of the island  through the eyes of a well-trained and experienced tour guide.

Approximately 30’ long, the vessel was manufactured in Europe and used by many Coast Guard units, military and commercial operators.  It carries a full complement of safety equipment, including a life jacket for each passenger.
