Olympic Pressure

Effective September 2001, Royal Olympic Cruises (ROC) becomes Royal Olympia Cruises, the Olympic Voyager will become the Olympia Voyager, and the Olympic Explorer the Olympia Explorer. All references to the word “Olympic” will be removed company-wide. “U.S. federal law grants to the United States Olympic Committee the exclusive right to the word ‘Olympic’ and thus could be construed to preclude the use of the word by the company in trade or business in the United States,” said a company filing. “The company’s use of its name has been challenged by the United States Olympic Committee, who have requested that the world ‘Olympic’ be replaced with ‘Olympia.’ The company has agreed to make the change, effective from September 2001.”

One wonders whether the U.S. Olympic Committee is familiar with Celebrity Cruises’ Olympic Restaurant…
