Carnival Corporation has reported net income of $127.4 million, or $0.43 per share, on revenues of $596.6 million for its second quarter ended May 31, 1997, compared to net income of $106.3 million, or $0.37 per share, on revenues of $516.8 million for the same quarter in 1996.

Net income for the six-month period was $212.8 million, or $0.71 per share, on revenues of $1.1 billion, compared to net income of $183.3 million, or $0.64 per share, on revenues of $965.6 million for the same period in 1996.

The increases in revenues and income were attributed to increased capacity and higher net yields.

The combined Carnival fleet achieved an average load factor of 108.0 percent and carried 495,000 passengers in its second quarter of this year, compared to an average load factor of 107.2 percent and 436.000 passengers for the same period last year.

For the six-month period of this year, the company carried 950,000 passengers for an average load factor of 107.2 percent, compared to 843,000 passengers and an average load factor of 107.1 percent for the same six months last year.

Looking to the remainder of 1997, Micky Arison, chairman and CEO of Carnival Corp., said that “although Alaska has experienced some softness, bookings for other itineraries have been strong, even  extending into the seasonally slower fourth quarter.

”Based on our outlook today, it appears the company is on track to post continuing strong financial results for the second half of fiscal 1997 ,” Arison said.

Earlier this month, Carnival acquired Costa Crociere jointly with Airtours for an estimated per berth price of $123,604.

And, even if Carnival does not acquire Celebrity, After a review of Costa’s business has been completed, Arison said plans call for “further expansion of Costa’s business in Europe and South America.”

Carnival’s results include subsidiaries Holland America Line and Windstar Cruises, as well as Seabourn Cruise Line (50 percent), Airtours (29 percent), and Carnival Cruises Asia (50 percent). In addition, Costa (50 percent) is expected to be “additive” in 1997.
