Wind Song, sister ship to Windstar Sail Cruises’ Wind Song, was christened in New York last week, following her maiden transatlantic crossing from Societe Nouvelle des Ateliers et Chantiers in France.
During the festivities, the French embassy presented Karl Andren, chairman of Windstar, with the Legion of Honor.
The 440-foot sail cruiser will spend one week in New York, before continuing on to Miami, San Diego, Long Beach, Santa Barbara and San Francisco. She is scheduled to begin her inaugural-year program of seven-day French Polynesia cruises from Papeete through the Society Islands on July 24. The maiden sailing is almost sold out, according to the line.
Free round-trip air from Los Angeles and San Francisco to Tahiti for full-fare passengers is being offered, representing a $450 per person savings off Windstar’s published add-on rates. Passengers departing from other cities will pay the add-on fare from their home city less the $450 add-on from the West Coast.
A third ship, Wind Spirit, currently under construction in France, is scheduled to begin sailing at the beginning of 1988 for Mediterranean cruises from Venice.
There is an option for a fourth ship, Wind Saga, but Andren said the line still has not decided when that vessel will be built.
