Members and supporters of New York City’s maritime community gathered today at the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal for a rededication ceremony for The Brooklyn Working Waterfront, an eight-panel mural that honors the people who made Brooklyn’s waterfront a vital part of the American economy. The event, hosted by New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC), was attended by Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz, Richard M. Larrabee, Director, Port Commerce Department, Port Authority of New York & New Jersey, James Devine, President, New York Container Terminal, and Louis Pernice, President, Local 1814, International Longshoremen’s Association.
“The rededication of this historic mural is a fitting tribute to the many men and women who today are contributing to the rebirth of New York City’s waterfront as a dynamic economic engine of the City’s economy,” said Seth W. Pinsky, President, New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC). “With industrial maritime uses at Red Hook expanding into Sunset Park, and the thriving container terminal at Howland Hook in Staten Island, the New York Harbor is on its way to reclaiming its former status as a vibrant hub for international shipping. I am pleased that NYCEDC is a part of this revitalization and this tribute.”
The 24-foot by 9-foot mural was created in 1963 by Bernard Seaman (1913-1989), a noted editorial cartoonist and artist. It was originally displayed in the lobby of the Brooklyn Longshoremen’s Medical Center in Brooklyn. When the building was scheduled for demolition in 2008, the efforts to preserve the mural were spearheaded by ILA Local 1814 President Louis Pernice and the members of the local union. The transfer and reinstallation at the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal was funded by New York Container Terminal President James Devine.
“The working waterfront has always played a significant role in the lives of New Yorkers and the economy of New York City, and this mural is a beautiful illustration of that relationship,” said Congressman Jerrold Nadler. “I, along with all New Yorkers, am grateful for the generosity of the New York Container Terminal and Jim Devine, its CEO, who paid for the preservation and relocation of the mural to the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal. I cannot think of a better location for it than at this cruise terminal with the views of the cranes, stevedores and the working waterfront at the Red Hook Container Terminal next door.”
New York State Assemblyman, Felix Ortiz conveyed his support for the rededication of the mural, “I commend the individuals who have worked so diligently to preserve this wonderful piece of art and for finding it a new home right here in our Red Hook Community. Preserving such historic relics is essential in understanding and celebrating the rich history of this great city. I am thankful to our leaders who recognized the importance of this project and I look forward to working with the city to preserve and protect our working Waterfront, which is critical to our economic prosperity.”
The mural depicts scenes of longshoremen hauling cargo-laden nets during the height of activity on the Brooklyn waterfront. Each of its 3 x 8 foot panels contains hundreds of pieces of acrylic layered to create different hues and textures. The men are depicted hoisting sacks of coffee and crates while barrels of oil wait to be loaded on the Brooklyn docks. There is a large stack in the foreground representing the ubiquitous steam ships of the era. The intricate work also portrays the Statue of Liberty centrally framed by the Brooklyn Bridge.
“The Brooklyn success story is in no small part due to the contributions of our waterfront and the men and women who have labored on its docks and along its shores, said Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz. “By restoring this vivid mural, we celebrate our waterfront’s colorful history and its continuing story as an international gateway to Brooklyn and the world.”
Councilmember Sara M. Gonzalez expressed her enthusiasm for the restoration of the mural, “As most of what remains of Brooklyn’s working waterfront is contained within my district, I am pleased this important work of art has been relocated here. May it forever stand in tribute to the men and women who have toiled so diligently in the past; those who continue to work here today and all those for whom we’re fighting to ensure there are more jobs in the future.”
For the past six years, the City and its maritime partners have been working to re-establish New York City as a thriving international port. At the 65th Street Rail Yard, there are two float bridges that connect the rail yard to New Jersey by barge float. In addition to the 65th Street Rail Yard, the City is exploring plans to renovate and maximize the use of rail via the 51st Street rail to move goods such as concrete and building materials, as well as flour and food products.
Port Authority Port Commerce Director Richard M. Larrabee said, “The continuing growth of the Port of New York and New Jersey would not be possible without the hard work and dedication of the men and women of the ILA moving cargo on a daily basis. The mural is symbolic of their efforts over the years to help this port and the accompanying economic activity and good paying jobs that it provides.”
Currently, there is significant private investment in water-related business. Lafarge, a major supplier of cement, has opened a new facility at the 25th street pier. The state-of –the-art, eco-friendly operation imports its products by water. The facility removes about 60 truck trips from area roads per day. At Pier 6, C.P. Cimento of Brazil is planning to invest approximately $25 million to rehabilitate the pier and construct a similar distribution facility. This operation will also remove about 60 truck trips daily.
“As we gather here today to honor the longshoremen who worked on Brooklyn’s docks in the past, we also look forward to a bright future for the Harbor,” said ILA Local President Louis Pernice. “To achieve that future, we need to reemphasize vocational skills as part of the public education curriculum to ensure that the youth of today and tomorrow are prepared for the jobs that will be created on the revitalized working waterfront.”
“I am very pleased to be here to capture the essence of the working waterfront and celebrate the future of the great Port of New York,” said New York Container Terminal CEO James Devine. “As we move ahead, it is always good that we look back and remember our heritage.”
At the South Brooklyn Marine Terminal, the Axis Group is investing $40 million dollars in an auto processing facility. The autos will arrive and depart by water. In addition, the new Sims Recycling facility at the 29th Street Pier will process the City’s metal, glass and plastics under a contract with the City. The state-of-the-art plant will employ about 100 workers.

When Celebrity Cruises bar manager Jesus Gomez calls out “Eureka!”, those around him know that their taste buds are about to be delighted. “Eureka” is the name of the original cocktail that Gomez invented in the bars aboard Celebrity Summit, and it recently won him the coveted “BACARDI Bartender of the Year” honor in the third annual BACARDI Cruise Competition.
Gomez found inspiration for “Eureka” in the unexpected combination of white cranberry juice, fresh basil leaves, and cucumber. After muddling the cucumber and basil in the bottom of a shaker, Gomez adds the cranberry juice, along with BOMBAY SAPPHIRE® Gin, Triple Sec, and ice before shaking the drink and pouring it into a highball glass.
“We strive to offer outstanding dining and beverage choices to our guests,” said Jacques Van Staden, Celebrity’s Vice President of Food and Beverage Operations. “We know our guests love to experience the unexpected, and Jesus’ recipe does just that.”
Gomez, who is a native of Pampanga, Philippines, has worked for Celebrity Cruises for 12 years. Within the next several months, his “Eureka” recipe will be available fleetwide. The cocktail also will be the signature drink at The Lawn Club on Celebrity Solstice, the first in a new class of ships debuting later this year.

Titled "The Yachting Collection," the lavishly illustrated catalogue includes complete details of 143 voyages, visiting over 220 ports in 66 countries on five continents during the 15-month period.
"2009 will be a landmark year for The Yachts of Seabourn," according to the line's president and CEO, Pamela C. Conover. "Seabourn Odyssey's debut in June will expand the ultra luxury segment of the cruise industry for the first time in six years," she continued, "and it will do so in a way that underscores Seabourn's commitment to continuing to provide the highly personalized, relaxed and sociable style of travel that has built our reputation, and that is only possible on our yachts."
Ports which are new for Seabourn, or which the Seabourn yachts have not visited in several years, include St. Raphael, Bandol and Antibes on the French Riviera; Opatija and Split in Croatia; Brindisi, Bari, and Trieste, Italy and Lundy Island and the Isles of Scilly in the United Kingdom. Seabourn Odyssey's World Cruise, in early 2010, will also add areas in the South Pacific, Australia and New Zealand that have been missing from Seabourn's itineraries in recent years. Returns to Bali, Borneo and a maiden visit to Sihanoukville, Cambodia will add novelty in the Asian portion of the voyage. Late-night stays and overnights in 30 key ports have also been added to the itineraries including cities such as Marseille, Amsterdam and Trieste as well as ports with active nightlife, such as Mykonos, St. Tropez, St. Barts, Portofino and Rhodes.
An intensive program of research, on-site inspections and detailed planning was conducted to ensure that Seabourn's yachts would call at the most desirable places in their peak seasons, and that Seabourn's guests would have insider's access to the best the place has to offer. The destinations of Seabourn Pride, Spirit, Legend and Odyssey include Europe, the Far East, South and Central America and the Caribbean. A month after the launch of its new MS Swiss Sapphire luxury riverboat, Tauck World Discovery has announced that construction has begun on another new vessel. The as-yet unnamed ship, which will begin operations in the spring of 2009, will be the third new Tauck-branded luxury riverboat launched in three years.
Although Tauck has confirmed that the ship is currently being constructed in the Netherlands, it is not providing specific details about some of the ship’s key features or amenities. There’s a good reason for the company’s reticence – the new build’s final configuration won’t be determined until later this year.
“We really try to let feedback from our guests drive what we offer on our riverboats,” explained Tauck CEO, Dan Mahar. “We won’t make any final decisions about some of the features on this newest ship until the fall, in order to take advantage of guest feedback we’ll be gathering over the course the 2008 operating season.”
According to Mahar, the company has already adapted its existing ships in response to guests’ suggestions. “We’ve added bistro dining on both the MS Swiss Sapphire and MS Swiss Emerald, so our guests can enjoy lighter fare in a more casual atmosphere, as an alternative to the main restaurant,” said Mahar, noting that Tauck is the only river cruise operator with a choice of onboard dining options.
Mahar also explained that the Swiss Sapphire’s design was modified mid-construction, after the company learned that guests would prefer an exercise room and massage studio to the facilities originally planned for the space. “River cruising is still evolving,” said Mahar, “and the best way to satisfy our guests’ evolving tastes is to solicit their input and incorporate it into what we do.” As on every Tauck trip, guests on Tauck river cruises complete a detailed feedback form near the conclusion of each voyage.
MORE SUITES AND FEWER PASSENGERS
Although the overall size of riverboats is limited by external factors like lock sizes and bridge clearance issues, Mahar explained that within those parameters, Tauck is still able to put its own unique and distinctive stamp on its vessels. “The new build will have a total of 21 suites and junior suites, just like the Swiss Sapphire and Swiss Emerald. That’s more than four-times the number of suites found on most other riverboats,” said Mahar. “We’ll also again limit capacity to just 118 guests, compared to 150 or more on other ships of comparable size. Like the Sapphire and Emerald, the new build will have spacious common areas and roomier cabins, for a more open and relaxed atmosphere.”

More than 15 million passengers are expected to cruise worldwide on some 294 ships in 2008, according to Cruise Industry News State of the Industry Report 2008- 2015, the leading industry trade publication. Nearly 11 million people will cruise on American-based ships, although only 85 percent will be Americans; more than 4 million will be Europeans on European ships; and the rest in Asia. Combined, the passengers are expected to generate an estimated $24.5 billion in revenues in 2008.
The 432-page report, which has been published annually since 1987, also projects that by 2012 the world fleet will consist of 334 ships carrying more than 20 million passengers. The largest companies will be Carnival Corporation with 11 different cruise lines under its corporate umbrella and a 46 percent market share; Royal Caribbean Cruises, with 6 brands and 25 percent of the market; NCL with 6 percent; and MSC Cruises with 5 percent. The rest of the market will be shared by more than 50 smaller operators.
Cruise Industry News tracks industry growth by market and by cruise line since 1992 through 2012 and projects company, industry and market development through 2015. The report tracks North American, European and Asian growth separately and divides the brands into market categories, since small, upscale ships do not necessarily compete with mega mass-market ships and are further categorized by luxury, adventure or niche markets.
Also shown is the traffic in the individual markets from Alaska to world cruises (in alphabetical order) and by brand, allowing the reader to track each market and each cruise line's deployment.
Finally, the comprehensive book also serves as a directory, listing all the cruise lines with descriptions, key executives and ships; shipyards that build cruise ships, ports, key suppliers, including shipping agents and food and beverage companies.
The Cruise Industry News State of the Industry Report 2008-2015 is available from www.cruiseindustrynews.com. The single copy price for the 432-page report is $675 in the U.S. and $745 elsewhere. Contact: Cruise Industry News, 441 Lexington Avenue, New York, NY 10017. Telephone: (212) 986-1025

Aker Yards ASA reported an EBITDA result of NOK 211 million for the first quarter of 2008 for the continuing operations. Earnings per share (EPS) were NOK 0.38 for the quarter, compared with NOK 2.14 in the corresponding period of 2007. The first quarter figures are in line with the expectations of gradual improvement and better predictability in the results through 2008 compared to 2007.
In the first quarter of 2008, Aker Yards' continuing operations had revenues of NOK 7 471 million, an increase of 8.7 percent compared with NOK 6 874 million in the corresponding period of 2007. The EBITDA result was NOK 211 million, compared with NOK 459 million in the corresponding quarter of 2007. The EBITDA margin for the first quarter of 2008 was 2.8 percent. Earnings per share (EPS) were NOK 0.38 in the quarter, compared with NOK 2.14 in the same period in 2007. Order intake in the first quarter 2008 was NOK 870 million, giving an order backlog of NOK 61 550 million comprising 101 vessels at the end of the quarter.
While the market and the operational environment in the entire shipbuilding industry was very heated in 2007, it is now expected that the growth rate will level out. Access to qualified personnel will remain a key focus area in most of the countries in which Aker Yards operates.
During the quarter, it was announced that Aker Yards ASA will take in FLC West, a Russian owned investment company, as a 70 percent shareowner and partner in three of the yards within the business area Merchant Vessels. Aker Yards will receive EUR 291.9 million in payment from FLC West.
The previous guiding for Aker Yards as a group was approximately four percent EBITDA margin for 2008. The Merchant Vessels yards affected by the transaction were for 2008 expected to deliver an EBITDA margin substantially higher than this guiding for the Group. Thus, the sale of 70 percent in the three yards will result in a change in the guided EBITDA margin for Aker Yards' group results for 2008 from approximately four percent as previously guided to approximately three to four percent for 2008.
The transaction with FLC West will result in a strengthening of earnings per share of approximately NOK 11 per share for the 2008 results. The sales transaction is expected to be completed within 30 June 2008, and the net gain from the transaction will be booked in the second quarter results 2008.
As a consequence of the transaction with FLC West, the results from the three sold yards are presented in Aker Yard's accounts as discontinued operations in first quarter 2008 and prior periods' profit and loss statements have been reclassified to be comparable. The remaining part of the business area Merchant Vessels, mainly consisting of the Florø yard, as well as units for development and sales of LNG technologies and other specialized solutions, is transferred to the new reporting segment Other Operations. With this, Merchant Vessels is no longer a separate reporting segment in Aker Yards.

The traditional symbol for a first anniversary is paper, and Azamara Cruises today is tempted to paper the walls of its Miami offices with the accolades the deluxe brand has received since setting sail for the first time just one year ago today.
“We’re thrilled with how far we’ve come in just one year, and honored by the recognition our deluxe brand has received from our guests, our travel agent partners, and the press,” said Azamara Cruises President and CEO Dan Hanrahan. “The extraordinary staff on both Azamara Journey and Azamara Quest has worked tirelessly to ensure that every guest receives the vacation experience we’ve promised since the brand’s launch.”
That launch officially began when Azamara Journey set sail last year, promising a more intimate onboard experience – with a capacity of just 694 guests – and access to the less-traveled ports of call experienced travelers want to visit.
Azamara also inspired a new category in the cruise business – the deluxe category – serving a niche market between premium and luxury.
“Azamara Cruises was expressly designed for travel enthusiasts who appreciate what a cruise vacation has to offer, but are looking for something a little different, and a little more special,” said Hanrahan. “And what’s special about Azamara is its distinctive combination of impeccable service, exceptional cuisine, and off-the-beaten-path destinations, with immersive shore excursions.”
Azamara expanded to a two-ship fleet just five months after the brand’s launch, when Azamara Quest entered service in October 2007. Both ships previously sailed with Madrid-based cruise and tour operator Pullmantur S.A., and were acquired when Azamara’s parent company, Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd., purchased the company in 2006.
Prior to both ships’ launch, the line invested nearly $40 million between the two to incorporate two specialty restaurants and 32 new suites on each ship, and entirely new bedding, decking, flooring, carpeting, art collection and design schemes, within a variety of updated, stylish lounges, including a Martini Bar, Mosaic Café, Sushi Café, Drawing Room jazz/piano bar, casino, Boutique C, AstralSpa by Elemis, Acupuncture at Sea and an Internet café.
The guest experience on both ships is decidedly more exclusive, with Azamara butler service in every stateroom and suite, as well as concierge-style amenities, including fresh-cut flowers, fresh fruit, Elemis toiletries, complimentary use of Frette cotton robes, two complimentary pairs of slippers, plasma TVs and plush European bedding.
The two specialty restaurants – the Mediterranean-influenced “Aqualina” and the steak and seafood restaurant, “Prime C,” each complimentary for guests – were created to rival some of the finest restaurants on land, and guest response indicates the line is meeting that goal, with ratings steadily rising from the brand’s launch to all-time highs that remain today. The main dining room, “Discoveries,” is open seating, as is the casual dining area, comprised of “Breeza” and “Windows Café.” There are no formal nights; instead, country-club casual apparel is welcome day and night.
Azamara Journey and Azamara Quest are currently plying the waters of the Mediterranean, on exotic itineraries such as a 16-night Western Europe cruise featuring four destinations in Spain, the Channel Islands, a cruise through Germany’s Kiel Canal, and a two-night stay in London near the Tower Bridge – a vivid illustration of Azamara cruise ships’ ability to visit locations larger ships can’t reach. Azamara Journey also sails in the Baltic this summer, with several overnight stays in captivating ports of call.
Beginning this fall, following its first European season, Azamara Journey will present two new, 16-night Panama Canal sailings, followed by a series of 12-night exotic Caribbean cruises through March 2009, when the ship will relocate to Europe.
Meanwhile, Azamara Quest will set sail in exotic Asia with a 24-night voyage from Athens (Lavrion), Greece to Singapore departing November 22, 2008, followed by an 18-night Southeast Asia voyage from Singapore to Hong Kong, China; two 14-night Southeast Asia cruises between Hong Kong and Singapore, and four 14-night Northeast Asia cruises between Hong Kong and Beijing (Tianjin), China. Seven-night escorted cruisetour packages are available for guests interested in optimizing their Asian experience, through in-depth land-based tours in Hong Kong, Beijing, Xian and Guilin, and visits to the Great Wall and Terracotta Warriors.
Azamara Quest will return to Europe on April 7, 2009, from Singapore to Athens (Lavrion), Greece, for its second season in Europe. All sailings on both ships – including those in 2009 – are open for booking.
Azamara Cruises is marking its anniversary with a complimentary champagne toast at sailaway today for all guests on both ships, capped with a special sweet treat with turndown service, and an internal celebration at the company’s Miami, Miramar and Wichita locations.

The implementation of Fidelio Cruise’s Fleet Management System (FMS) across Holland America Line’s 13-ship cruise fleet is now almost complete. Only two vessels, Maasdam and Volendam, remain and their conversions to Fidelio’s Shipboard Property Management System (SPMS) inclusive of FMS will finish by the end of May. This will leave only Holland America Line’s newbuilding Eurodam, due to be delivered from Fincantieri’s Marghera shipyard in June, which will have FMS in operation from day one in addition to the complete complement of solutions provided by Fidelio’s SPMS and MICROS® 9700 Point of Sale.
“We are very pleased with the FMS installation across our fleet,” says Ron Sorozan, Holland America Line’s Vice President, Information Technology. “We took the decision to install Fidelio Cruise’s FMS on board our ships following a review of IT in which we concluded that the latest systems offer significant opportunities to raise service levels and improve operating efficiency aboard ship, while also providing better information for cruise managers ashore. This already proves to be the case,” Sorozan adds, “and we now look forward to project completion over the next two months.”
Fidelio Cruise’s Head of Development for Fleet Management Systems (FMS), Ratan Singh Rathore, has overseen the entire installation which has involved both shipboard sites and new systems at the Seattle-based cruise line’s head office. “We have worked very closely with Holland America Line personnel,” Ratan explains, “and this partnership has resulted in an extremely successful project. Holland America Line personnel have been very receptive to the new software and clearly recognise the benefits that FMS brings to their business.”
FMS breaks new ground as the first in a new generation of cruise fleet software systems. It monitors all financial transactions, passenger and crew movements, hotel maintenance issues and passenger feedback across a fleet of ships and transfers all this data to shore-based managers at head office on a frequency to be determined, but typically once a day. Thus cruise operators can compare the relative performance of ships within a fleet and different cruise itineraries. They can even track trends in passenger demographics and the changing spending habits of their customers.
Explains Ratan: “Holland America Line’s personnel feel really positive about the ability to access onboard data in almost real-time. Because the ships transfer data to shore every night, they can see what actually happened on board their ships yesterday. The software provides excellent searching, grouping, filtering and analysing functionality and enables precise tracking of who spends what, where and when, what the guests and crew consume and as a result, what represents the most popular products and service offerings – spa treatments and shore excursions, for example.”
Ratan continues: “It also provides managers ashore with an insight into gangway management and security issues, hotel maintenance, response times and, importantly, passenger feedback. A prompt response to a disgruntled passenger is more important than ever,” he notes.
Holland America Line has implemented Fidelio Cruise’s Comment Card Module which ensures that shoreside representatives have access to guest feedback almost immediately. The software analyses feedback automatically, enabling cruise line personnel to respond promptly to complaints. This enables Holland America Line to initiate its own in-house Comment Card analysis and will save money on its present arrangements using outside Comment Card consultants to analyse guest feedback.
The FMS software has been designed to dovetail neatly with the cruise line’s existing management systems. Holland America Line places importance on the ability to customise the system so that it groups and classifies relevant data and directs it to the appropriate shore-based department. For example, house-keeping data have been made available only to those who need to see them; and similarly personnel with responsibilities for medical matters, accounts or onboard revenue receive just the data they need.
Holland America Line system users have identified a key benefit in the ability to standardise fleet operations across different ships. Previously, different software systems were in operation on board different vessels. Now, though, shore-based staff can clearly see how the SPMS and Micros Point-of-Sale systems are used in the same way aboard each ship. And fleet overviews, set up by Fidelio Cruise personnel at head office, can be used both for overall fleet performance analysis, but also as a basis for more detailed ship-by-ship performance comparisons.
“We are convinced that FMS heralds the dawn of a new era in cruise ship management,” says Tony Heuer, Fidelio Cruise President and founder. “Just a few years ago, it would not have been possible to collect or transmit this volume of data between ship and shore. Now the effective management of this data means that shore-based managers can analyse cruise demography and consumer trends as never before. With this information, they can determine which products and services are the most popular, and which are not. This, in turn, enables them to optimise their offerings,” he notes.
